Han Yung Un (1879-1944) es uno de los poetas más apreciados de la literatura moderna coreana.En él se funden el renovador del espíritu poético de una época y el apasionado independentista opuesto a la dominación colonial japonesa. Frente al nihilismo y la desilusión de algunos de sus contempóraneos, Han Yung Un lanzó un mensaje de esperanza basado en el pensamiento budista. Fundador del movimiento independentista Samil (1919), fue uno de los redactores de la Declaración de Independencia, por lo que debió sufrir largos años de prisión. Maestro de Budismo desde 1909, la publicación de sus obras filosóficas contribuyó a la reforma del Budismo en Corea.Su silencio, publicado en 1926, es algo más que un libro de poesía. A partir de la imagen simbólica del “Amado” el autor identifica el objeto poético como pueblo, nación, Budha, todas las criaturas y la verdad del Budismo, excluyendo de su interpretación relación alguna con el amor físico entre personas singulares.En su Introducción, el traductor, Dr. Kim Hyun-Chang, hispanista coreano de reconocido prestigio internacional, nos ofrece las claves histórico-filosóficas que nos revelan la hondura y densidad de estos poemas.
