El signo de los cuatro es la segunda novela de las cuatro existentes escrita por Arthur Conan Doyle y protagonizada por Sherlock Holmes, pues el resto son relatos cortos. Esta novela, ambientada en Inglaterra a finales del siglo XIX, relata la misteriosa desaparición del padre de Mary Morstan y cómo un misterioso desconocido, que le ha ido enviando perlas cada año durante los últimos seis años de la desaparición de su padre, quiere contactar con ella. Cuando este misterioso personaje se descubre, quien resulta ser viejo amigo de su padre, Thaddeus Sholto, muestra su verdadera intencion: compartir con ella un tesoro que su padre escondió para ambos y el hermano de Thaddeus, con quien ha logrado descubrirlo. Sin embargo, la aventura comienza cuando Sherlock Holmes, contratado por Mary Morstan para descubrir al misterioso personaje y las extrañas pistas que tienen acerca de la desaparición del padre de Mary, además debe descubrir, junto al Dr. Watson, quién ha asesinado a Thaddeus y su hermano en su casa, que será el mismo que ha robado el tesoro.
