Nuestra Señora de París comienza con las celebraciones populares en el Palacio de Justica con motivo de la epifanía de 1482. La novela nos presenta a una serie de personajes que han quedado para la historia de la literatura: la gitana Esmeralda, que predice el porvenir y atrae fatalmente a los hombres; Quasimodo, un deforme joven campanero que vive en la catedral, con una fuerza enorme y detrás de cuya fealdad se esconde un corazón sensible; y el archidiácono Claude Frollo, padre adoptivo del campanero. Frollo, atraído por la bailarina, pide a su protegido Quasimodo que la rapte. Sin embargo, la intervención del capitán Febo de Châteaupers impide el secuestro y lleva a Quasimodo a ser condenado al suplicio público. Es azotado en la plaza y recibe todo el odio y los insultos del pueblo, que lo detesta por su fealdad. Sin embargo, la gitana Esmeralda sube al patíbulo y le ayuda, un gesto por el que Quasimodo siente un agradecimiento y un afecto enorme por su piedad, ya que no estaba acostumbrado a que lo trataran bien.
