Los cuentos de horror o cuentos góticos son la obra más conocida de Edgar Allan Poe, quien pretende no tanto aterrar al lector como elevar el género a la categoría de gran arte fundiendo el ambiente gótico con la plausibilidad psicológica. El autor estadounidense adoptó este género para satisfacer a los lectores de su época y entre sus temas recurrentes trata frecuentemente la muerte, la venganza, la culpa o el poder de la voluntad. La repercusión de su obra ha sido extraordinaria y muchos escritores han reconocido en él una gran influencia, como Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Ray Bradbury o Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Fuera de EEUU, Poe influyó en otros grandes autores de la épcoa, como Charles Baudelaire (uno de los llamados “poetas malditos”), Víctor Hugo, Rimbaud o Guy de Maupassant.
