Al centro della vicenda vi è la fuga di un modesto bibliotecario, Mattia Pascal, che dopo una serie di eventi inattesi e fortuiti decide di lasciarsi alle spalle un matrimonio fallito in partenza e una situazione familiare dolorosa, con l’illusione d’aver finalmente risolto tutti i suoi problemi. Mattia Pascal scopre ben presto però che quella fuga ha un prezzo che nemmeno la sua grossa vincita alla roulette può ripagare; infatti, la moglie e la tanto odiata suocera lo hanno riconosciuto in un morto suicida e tutti in paese lo considerano ormai morto e sepolto. Inizialmente Mattia Pascal si lascia trasportare dagli eventi e decide di dare una svolta alla sua vita approfittando del pregiudizio del paese nei suoi confronti e della grande ricchezza vinta al gioco, ma ben presto si rende conto che fingersi morto non lo rende a tutti gli effetti legalmente e ufficialmente parte della società. Per non restare schiacciato dalla morsa degli eventi Mattia Pascal è costretto a ritornare sui suoi passi, ma quello che trova al suo ritorno in paese è ormai cambiato per sempre.
