Publicada en 1897, Genio y figura cuenta la historia de Rafaela, “la Generosa”, que de “moza del partido” llega, impulsada por su carácter, a conseguir un ventajoso matrimonio que le permite formar parte de la más alta sociedad de París y Río de Janeiro. La trama de la novela está inspirada en los recuerdos y amores del propio Valera durante su estancia en la ciudad brasileña y encontramos de nuevo el tema del amor, clave en la obra del escritor, que en esta ocasión se resuelve de una forma más natural que en Pepita Jiménez. Genio y figura provocó una cierta polémica en su día porque se asemeja en cierto modo a las novelas eróticas francesas, aunque el autor se aleja del naturalismo y no desprecia claramente las normas sociales que imperaban en aquella época.
