La importancia de Andrés Bello (Caracas, Venezuela, 1781 – Santiago de Chile, 1865) es de primer orden en Hispanoamérica. Contemporáneo de las guerras napoleónicas en Europa y de las de independencia en América, Bello se propuso asimilar la modernidad sin descuidar la tradición. Durante su largo exilio en Londres (1810-1829) se familiarizó con la filosofía inglesa y consultó en la Biblioteca del Museo Británico manuscritos medievales para entender el surgimiento del idioma español. Una vez radicado en Chile, redactó, además, el Código Civil (1840-1855), que asimiló a partir del Code Napoleón (1804-1807) y que sirvió de modelo para otras repúblicas hispanas. El poetizar y el legislar, la noción de que redactar es ordenar, le permitieron formular una «Gramática de la lengua castellana» (1847) cuyos alcances se extienden hacia una dimensión filosófica del lenguaje. Pues no es casual que Bello haya escrito también una «Filosofía del entendimiento» (aparecida póstumamente en 1881), en uno de cuyos epígrafes iniciales previno contra “los colores brillantes de la imaginación”. La presente antología pretende contribuir tanto al estudio como a la difusión de la obra de Andrés Bello y el amplio caudal de estudios que la acompaña. Nuestra selección intenta subrayar, a la luz del comparatismo histórico, las aportaciones de Bello a la filología medieval y a la filosofía del conocimiento.
