Tres mujeres, descendientes una de otra, desarrollan su existencia en La Coruña, que es tan protagonista como ellas de Carmen, Carmela, Carmiña (Fluorescencia). La historia de una gran parte del siglo XX español, y de Cuba también, aparece en sus páginas a través de la mirada de estas mujeres “especiales”, no sólo por sus conocimientos heredados matriarcalmente, sino también por sus “poderes”. Esta es una novela en que las mujeres llevan la vanguardia, en su interacción necesaria con hombres que a veces sólo observan; otras, cuidan; pocas, temen; y varias, aman: novios, amantes, esposos, hijos, familiares, vecinos, amigos y, por supuesto, enemigos. Cada generación de estas mujeres tendrá una forma diferente delidiar con el mundo que le rodea, pero, en esencia, coincidirán en que el amor que les une y el que brindan es el punto de convergencia que anula sus desacuerdos en la forma con que eligen vivir y enfrentar la vida, tanto como lo es la presencia de “la cubana” centenaria Mamita Carmen. Pareciera que María del Carmen Formoso Lapido volcó en estas páginas mucha de su experiencia vital, y así nos legó una historia en que la sensación de verosimilitud, realidad y autenticidad, se impone; incluso aunque haya pinceladas de realismo mágico cuando las “habilidades sobrenaturales” de las protagonistas entran en juego. Una lectura donde la representación de un escenario particular nos refleja de modo universal.
